Two schools from
Kegalle and Kurunegala are very keen on improving their students’ knowledge of the
English language and have taken up many projects to improve this. Attached is a
request from the principal of the Kegalle School that pertains to the "Reading
Room Project". The Reading Room Project
helps provide rural areas with libraries.
It reads as follows, “The parents of these children are not privileged enough
to provide new text books or access to the internet to their children, as they
perform seasonal work and have no steady income. However, they ensure that the children attend
school despite the daily short comings they face. Since the schools are located in very rural
areas they do not have the resources needed to improve the library or help the
students. The teachers do their best to educate the students despite the lack
of resources in the school. What the children receive through the school system
is limited, but through improving resources such as the school library we will
enrich their education.”
There are two other schools
from the Vavuniya district whose names will be provided by the Ministry of
Education during the latter part of this quarter. This district was affected by
the civil war and many families had to be relocated. Now that the families have
returned to their villages the old schools have to be rebuilt, and new ones made.
Many children travel a long distance to get to school as there are currently no
schools near the village. The parents undergo a lot of hardship to provide
their children with a good education. In providing these children with the
essentials such as books we can help boost their knowledge as they do not have
access to much reading materiel. There is no access to the internet, radio or
television so the only form of literature they have comes in the form of books.
Together
we can help assist underprivileged & low-income students by providing them
with access to educational resources which will allow them to reach their
goals. Improving the school libraries with text books and other novels will
help improve their situation and help provide these children with a brighter
future.
